To effectively use the Assault Cannon, fire it until you feel the cone of fire is want you want. The bar on the minigun and under the crosshair will show how large your spread is getting. If it's on the left, it's small, but so is the rate of fire. If it's on the right, the spread is very large and the weapon eats shells like crazy. Once you've got the spread you want, press the right mouse button. That'll lock down the spread and keep it from getting larger.

To effectively use the Assault Cannon, fire it at close to medium range. The bullets will spread at long range, making it difficult to effectively harm a target at a distance. The assault cannon also has a very short windup time before it begins firing.
